A model school was established at Washington State Normal School during the first year of operation in 1891. In 1917, the school was named the Edison School after an agreement was made between the trustees of the Normal School and the Ellensburg School District for use of the training school building. In 1889 the United States Congress authorized the residents of Washington Territory to form a state government. The College Elementary School was created when the old Edison School (Washington State Normal School Training School) was relocated to a new building in 1939. In 1963, the school was renamed the Amanda Hebeler Elementary School (Washington Center for Early Childhood Education).
